Steve Biko was a South African anti-apartheid activist, author and philosopher who died alone in a prison cell on 12 September 1977. According to an autopsy report, he died due to excessive brain injuries after he was arrested and detained. Biko was among the courageous African socialists who were at the forefront of the anti-apartheid campaign called the Black Consciousness Movement in the late 1960s to 1970s. 

Steve was raised in a poor Xhosa family that was based in Ginsberg township in the Eastern Cape. Fortunately, he was able to study medicine at the University of Natal where he was a member of the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS). The group was formed to strongly oppose the apartheid system that was segregating the South African community from the White people who lived in their own motherland.

Steve Biko Career

After finishing his time at St.Francis with very impressive grades, Steve joined Durban Medical School at the University of Natal Non-European section (UNNE) in 1966. During this time, he lived in the Alan Taylor Residence which was a very segregated living quarters for many Black students at the University.

The section had its own Students Representative Council (SRC) where Steve was an active member as well. He was elected to the SRC in his first year of studies. Thus, he was involved in NUSAS politics and attended the NUSAS conference for the first time. Before that, Biko even engaged in various debates about the role of NUSAS because it was mostly dominated by White students.
